JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Position: Custodian, General

 

Job Summary: The General Custodian plays a critical role in supporting student learning by maintaining a safe, clean, healthy, and welcoming school environment. Through daily custodial services, preventative maintenance, and responsive support, the General Custodian contributes to student attendance, staff productivity, community pride, and the overall educational mission of Wayland Public Schools. 

The General Custodian is responsible for performing routine and specialized cleaning, sanitation, facility support, and safety-related duties to ensure school buildings and grounds are maintained to high standards of cleanliness, appearance, functionality, and environmental health. Every employee contributes to the success, health, and well-being of our students. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Not limited to):

Cleaning and Sanitization

Facility Appearance and Learning Environment

Work Environment

Work is performed in school buildings, athletic facilities, and school grounds. Duties may require evening, weekend, vacation-period, or emergency response work as assigned. 

 

Salary Range: Commensurate with the Local Union 1116 Custodian and Maintenance Salary Scale Example: Category I - Step 1 $22.24/hr or $46,437 annual plus over-time opportunity

 

Work Schedule: 2026–2027 School Year; 12-month assignment; 8 hours per day [or night shift]
